One of the best things I did in Antarctica was spend a night camping under the stars on Hovgaard Island. This article will outline what you need to pack, prepare and everything you need to know before you depart.

What to wear camping in Antarctica
Winter-grade outerwear will be supplied by One Ocean Expeditions so there’s no need to pack expensive gear. I wore:
- Tights under a pair of jeans
- A long sleeved top with a singlet underneath
- Fleece sweater
- Two pairs of warm socks
- Gloves
- Beanie
- Sunglasses for the zodiac ride over
The following items are provided to keep you snug throughout the night:
- Windproof / waterproof jacket
- Waterproof insulated bib trousers
- Comfortable insulated rubber boots
What to pack camping in Antarctica
Other than the clothes mentioned above, you don’t need to bring anything. In fact, other than a bottle of drinking water, no food or drink is allowed off the vessel (to make as little impact on the environment as possible). With temperatures as low as -15 you do need specialist equipment to camp. One Ocean Expeditions will provide everything you need for the night:
- Sleeping bag (up to -18 degrees Celcius)
- Bag Liner
- Bivy Bag
- Thermal / cold-resistant mat
On arrival to our site, we dug holes in the ground and set up our bags.
What to expect when camping in Antarctica
Stargazing
I have never seen the Milky Way as clearly as I did that night in Antarctica. Looking up I could see planets, satellites and countless brightly sparkling stars – it was beautiful.
Wildlife
During our time on the island, we witnessed so much wildlife. A pod of humpback whales passed 20 m from the shoreline as we set up camp. Several Crabbe seals also decided to pay us a visit on nearby rocks. It was absolutely insane going to sleep to the sound of ocean waves, distant avalanches, icebergs creaking and the occasional splash of nearby animals.
Wow-factor landscape
The sunset I witnessed camping in Antarctica is one of the most incredible experiences of my life. The pink glow on the pristine white snow and mountain ranges were surreal. While you will see many beautiful landscapes during your time in Antarctica, watching the stars appear from your very own sleeping bag was unforgettable.
How cold does it actually get?
Pretty damn cold. But not enough that I was ever too uncomfortable or wanted to leave. If for some reason it did get unbearable a member of staff could promptly take you on a zodiac back to the ship (but you wouldn’t be able to return).
How to book a trip to camp in Antarctica
Camping in Antarctica count was included in the cost of my One Ocean Cruise. This was one of the important factors I considered when choosing an expedition. On some vessels, camping is not included and can be up to 500 USD extra. I cannot recommend this experience more. Despite being a chilly night, it is the most stunning and remote place you could ever go camping.
