Instagram Guide to Lisbon, Portugal
10. LX Factory
LX factory is a trendy district in Alcântara filled with cafes, restaurants, quirky novelty stores and art galleries. This mini city has insta-worthy installations and street art on every corner. My favourite place in LX factory was Ler Devager bookstore.
9. Rua Nova do Carvalho (Lisbon’s Pink Street)
Lisbon’s oh so instagrammable pink street was renovated into a bustling nightlife hotspot in 2011. Formerly the red light district, it is now home to bars, cafes, and restaurants. I visited on a rainy afternoon to get the archway to myself.
8. Alfama
The winding medieval alleyways of Alfama are your best bet to photograph Lisbon’s quaint doorways, azujlous tiles, and rustic alleyways. Make your way from Tejo River up the sloping neighbourhood to be rewarded with breathtaking views from the top (and coincidentally, the next destination on our countdown).
7. Largo Portas Do Sol & Miradouro de Santa Luzia
At the top of Alfama you will find Largo Portas Do Sol & Miradouro de Santa Luzia. These are the best places to get iconic photos of the burnt red rooftops of Lisbon. Miradouro de Santa Luzia also has a beautiful terrace to frame the view.
6. Barrio Alto
Barrio Alto is the grungy bar district of Lisbon. It lined with lanterns, brightly coloured graffiti and pebblestone streets.
5. Miradouro de Sao Pedro de Alcantra
While one of the most instagrammable places in Lisbon, Miradouro de Sao Pedro de Alcantra is notoriously difficult to photograph. There are often large crowds and the balcony blocks a lot of the view so it’s difficult to get a person in the frame as well as the background. However the lookout is so vast and breathtaking, it’s 100% a must see. I recommend visiting early and bringing a wide angle lens to get the best shots.
4. Belem Tower
Belem Tower is a short 15-minute drive (and 4 euro uber!) from city central. The line was so long when we arrived that we decided to not view inside. The outside is very impressive regardless and if you go toward the pier (away from the line) it’s easy to get shots without anyone in it.
3. Praca do Comercio
Go to Praca do Commercio between 6am-8am to photography the square before the crowds arrive.
2. Elavador de Santa Justa
Another must-see (and photograph!) is an iconic Lisbon tram. While they are all around the city, to get the best photo of a yellow tram in Lisbon visit Elevador de Santa Justa. It arrives every 15 minutes and sits there for a good 5 minutes giving you plenty of time to take pictures with it.
1. Day Trip to Pena Palace, Sintra
Now, this may be cheating because it’s not technically in Lisbon. But I think the fact its only 37 minutes away means Pena Palace is close enough! Follow this link to read all about how to do a Sintra day trip from Lisbon and get the best photos of Pena Palace.
